Messaging and Talking Points

Talking POints

  1. Christian nationalists are attempting to further their false version of American history by passing [Bill#], which would make special “In God We Trust” license plates available for a fee [and give that money to religious groups].

  2. Creating special “In God We Trust” license plates is exclusionary and divisive. Citizens have a variety of beliefs -- Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, atheist, to name a just a few. The state should not be imposing a particular religious viewpoint.

  3. [Bill#] would cause the state government to fund religious groups through the purchase of special license plates. Funds provided to these organizations lack transparency and accountability. If religious groups want to raise funds, they can do so -- but the government shouldn’t be fundraising for them.

  4. Freedom of religion means the government cannot impose a religious viewpoint on anyone. [Bill #] is an obvious effort by special interests to impose their religion on everyone else.

  5. Similar license plate bills have been struck down because it is unconstitutional for the state to favor specific religious viewpoints. Taxpayers should not have to pay to defend a law that is unnecessary and unconstitutional.
